Manchester’s best small club needed a website to match and I was more than happy to accept the project when approached. Their previous website did not showcase the venue in all of its glory, located at Downtex Mill in Manchester. Built with an outdated WordPress theme, buggy on mobile and with no high-quality images, it did the venue no justice. Precious time was spent adding events manually and they hadn’t updated their gallery for months.
Clean, fast and simple
It is often a case that websites can be cluttered. With nightlife, when a user visits your website their looking for either upcoming events or photos of the venue. With this reasoning, I decided to make the homepage as simple as possible. An image slider shows off the venue’s multiple rooms while the section below displays 4 upcoming events. Instead of having individual pages for the events, two buttons link to either the ticket website or the Facebook event, where they can find further details. As the website is coded from the ground up, it’s incredibly fast, an important factor to keep users on the web page.
Custom media player
For me, embedding videos from YouTube or Vimeo tarnishes the feel of the website. Using the Plyr media player for video and audio files keeps in line with the sleek aesthetic throughout. Hidden regularly create new content in the form of after movies and live sets that sit nicely on the media page.
Automatic event import and admin system
My favourite feature of this website is the ability to import events from Facebook. This is done via the use of a Python script, which scrapes the venues Facebook page and adds the event information to an SQL database on the server. Whenever Hidden upload a new event to Facebook, I run the script and it imports the info in an instant. They can then add any DJs on the lineup via the custom admin panel and the changes are reflected.
Other things to note
The website also implements Google Analytics so Hidden can understand their audience, the Facebook pixel so they can retarget adverts to visitors and MailChimp so subscribers are added straight into their mailing list. The website is optimised for search for keywords such as nightclubs in Manchester as well as fully mobile friendly.
